      This week we polled team members working on our big kick off event, Vintage Oregon, who range from a newbie wine drinker to an oenophile that grew up on a vineyard. We asked each person, “What tip would you tell someone new to wine tasting?” Their timely advice is the perfect prep for our event on April 28th.  


      Margaret, wine traveler - “If you are interested in starting a wine collection, be sure to ask the winery if they can ship your bottles back home. Especially when traveling, this can be an easy and inexpensive option, which most wineries offer. Even if I’m take a quick trip to the Columbia Gorge, or down in Southern Oregon, I like the fact I don’t have to worry about needing extra space in my car or making sure the temperature is right during transportation.”

      Rindi, the new(ish) explorer - “The first time I went wine tasting with friends, I was so worried about those spit buckets! I quickly realized that most everyone at the tasting room was just having a good time learning about the wines. You do not have to drink all the wine in your glass. Just toss the unwanted wine into the dump bucket!” 

      Charles, a white wine fan - “Many people are familiar with Oregon’s Willamette Valley and our reputation for great Pinot Noir - but our various wine regions offer so much more than just that varietal. If you stick to grapes you know, you could miss out on the regional specialties. I would suggest trying whites like Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Viognier. And for reds, be sure to taste Oregon Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Franc, to name just a few.”

      Shannon, the foodie - “For beginners, I would say to forget the fancy terms and just have fun. Food pairings? Great to know but not a necessity. If it tastes good to you, that’s all that matters. Oh - and if water is provided, use it to clear your palate or to rinse your glass. Sometimes rinsing the glass is a good idea when the tasting moves from whites to reds or to dessert wines.”

      Michelle, our socialite - “Don’t be shy... I’ve found that winemakers are some of the friendliest people I know! They’re so approachable and over the years, I’ve made friends with many of them. I have learned that I could ask them any question, it didn’t matter what, and they were eager to answer and share their passion. At your next tasting, don’t be afraid to ask questions - these people love to share their wine and their expertise!"

      Dewey, an experienced wine lover - “Everybody’s preferences are different, and wine is no different. Just be polite and respectful to the winemaker and the people around you. Try not to interfere with other people’s ability to smell their wines. Smoking and using any scent like perfumes or colognes are a no-no. It really affects a tasters’ ability to detect aromas.”
