Christopher Columbus, under the support of the Spanish crown, may have discovered the New World. But there’s a little bit of the Old World, Spain, being created in Southern Oregon, thanks to Earl and Hilda Jones and Abacela.
The couple, with their passion for Spanish food and Spanish wines, came to Oregon in search of a place to plant and produce tempranillo, a Spanish red varietal. That resulted in the birth of Abacela in Roseburg, and the offering of Spanish varietals has expanded from tempranillo to include grenache (known as garnacha in Spain) and albariño.
