    1. Oregon wineries are often said to “fight above their weight” and the recent edition of Wine and Spirits Magazine brought that point home once again.

Ten Oregon wineries were named to W&S’s international top 100 wineries. Of the 42 U.S. wineries on the list of top 100, Oregon accounted for 24 percent of the total --  a pretty amazing score considering Oregon’s industry is dwarfed by much larger and more established wine regions to the north and south. Oregon wineries making the list were Adelsheim Vineyards, Bergstrom, Chehalem, Cristom, Evening Land Vineyards, Eyrie Vineyards, King Estate, Lange Estate, St. Innocent and Stoller.

Oregon also scored well in the 100 best wines category. Evening Land’s 2010 La Sourch Seven Springs Vineyards won best Chardonnay. Chehalem’s 2011 Willamette Valley Three Vineyards won best Pinot gris. Chehalem’s 2009 Ribbon Ridge Ridgecrest Vineyards, St. Innocent 2010 Eola-Amity Hills Temperance Hill Vineyard and Stoller 2008 Dundee Hills Cathy's Reserve were selected as some of the best Pinot noirs.

In the 100 best buys of the year category, Bethel Heights 2010 Eola-Amity Hills Unoaked ($18) was the top Chardonnay. King Estate’s 2010 Acrobat ($12) was voted second top Pinot gris buy. William Augustus’ 2008 Rogue Valley ($18) took top honors in the Cabernet Franc category. Lange’s 2010 Willamette Valley ($24) won best buy in the Pinot noir category.
